Victor Wembanyama Takes Less Money to Boost Spurs' Championship Chances
54 days agoSan Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has chosen to take a reduced salary in his recent $252 million contract extension, a move intended to enhance the team's chances of winning a championship. This decision surprised many, considering Wembanyama's accolades, including Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors, alongside two All-Star selections in his first three seasons.
In an interview with The Athletic, Wembanyama explained that he does not want financial constraints to hinder the team's potential. He stated, "The reality of today's NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it's never our case."
By opting for a 25 percent maximum deal instead of the 30 percent supermax he likely qualified for, Wembanyama is saving the Spurs approximately $50 million over the contract's duration. This strategic decision allows the team to utilize a nontaxpayer midlevel exception in 2027, keeping them under the salary cap's first apron.
While it is uncommon for players to leave money on the table, Wembanyama's choice mirrors similar actions taken by other NBA stars, such as Jalen Brunson, who sacrificed a significant sum to help his team win a championship. Wembanyama's gesture also recalls Tim Duncan's decision in 2007, which contributed to the Spurs' success.
The effectiveness of Wembanyama's approach remains to be seen, but his commitment to the team's success is clear, especially after witnessing the Knicks, led by Brunson, eliminate the Spurs in the NBA Finals.
