Hurston Waldrep Evaluated for Right Arm Discomfort, Braves' Depth at Risk

Hurston Waldrep, a promising young pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, is currently being evaluated for discomfort in his right arm. This development comes after Waldrep was removed from his start with the Gwinnett Stripers due to a noticeable drop in velocity during the game.

Waldrep made his major league debut nearly a year ago, showcasing his potential with nine starts for the Braves. His performance initially sparked optimism about his role in the team's rotation for the 2026 season. However, he faced challenges earlier this year, undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow and spending time on the 60-day injured list before returning to action in late June.

Since his return, Waldrep has made three appearances for Atlanta, including two starts, but struggled in his last outing, allowing seven runs in just 3.1 innings. Following this performance, he was optioned back to Triple-A on July 10.

The situation adds to the Braves' concerns regarding their starting rotation, which is already missing key pitchers like Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, Joey Wentz, and AJ Smith-Shawver. While Smith-Shawver is nearing a return from Tommy John surgery, Wentz has been ruled out for the season, and the timelines for Strider and Schwellenbach remain uncertain.

With Waldrep's potential setback, the Braves may need to consider acquiring a starting pitcher before the trade deadline on August 3, 2026, as both JR Ritchie and Owen Murphy have struggled to make an impact in their limited big league appearances.
