Wander Franco Seeks Return to Baseball Amid Eligibility Concerns

Wander Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, is eager to make his return to baseball after being found guilty of sexually abusing a minor in May. Reports indicate that he is looking to participate in the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games, which are set to begin later this month.

Despite his intentions, Franco's eligibility remains in question. According to the Tampa Bay Times, he was not included on the Dominican Republic's preliminary roster, effectively barring him from participation. The Dominican Baseball Federation (FEDOM) is currently working with the Dominican Olympic Committee to seek a resolution that would allow Franco to play.

FEDOM expressed optimism about the situation, stating they are handling the necessary procedures to register Franco. However, Garibaldy Bautista, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, has confirmed that Franco is ineligible to compete in the games, as he is not on the official long list of candidates.

Franco, who last took the field in an MLB game on August 12, 2023, has been on MLB's restricted list since then, preventing him from playing in both major and minor leagues, as well as the Dominican Winter League. While he did not receive jail time following his conviction, the case has significantly impacted his career and future in baseball.
