Man Wei Chong Prepares for Japan Open Amidst Injury Recovery
67 days agoIn Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi is working diligently to prepare Man Wei Chong for the upcoming Japan Open, where he will debut alongside new partner Soh Wooi Yik. The BWF World Tour is making its return to Asia following the Canada Open, and the spotlight is on the new pairing as they gear up for their first match in Tokyo.
Man Wei Chong, who has just resumed training after a right knee injury, is currently at about 70 to 75 percent fitness according to Herry. His last appearance on the court was during the Thomas Cup group stage in Denmark back in May. Herry noted that while Wei Chong is in training, he still needs to strengthen certain areas to regain full readiness.
The duo's first challenge will be against the Lee brothers from Chinese Taipei in the men's doubles opening round at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Herry emphasized the importance of this match as it will provide insights into the pair's chemistry under competitive pressure, especially since Wei Chong is still recovering from his injury.
In addition to Wei Chong and Wooi Yik, Malaysia will field several other men’s doubles pairs at the Japan Open. Notable competitors include former world junior champions Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai, as well as independent players like Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, who face tough opponents in their opening matches.
Herry also mentioned that a recent joint training session with Singapore's men’s doubles squad has been beneficial for preparation ahead of the tournament. This collaboration allows Malaysian players to experience varied training patterns and opponents, enhancing their readiness for the challenges ahead.
