Garbrandt Urges UFC to Enhance Support for Retired Fighters

Cody Garbrandt, a former bantamweight champion in the UFC, has voiced his concerns regarding the lack of support for fighters as they transition into retirement. He believes that the organization should do more to assist athletes in this critical phase of their careers.

Garbrandt pointed out that UFC fighters, especially those at the entry level, receive relatively low pay, ranging from approximately $12,000 to $20,000. While the UFC does provide win bonuses and performance incentives, fighters are classified as independent contractors and do not receive benefits such as pensions or long-term health insurance.

As Garbrandt prepares for his upcoming fight at UFC 329, he reflects on the challenges faced by many fighters who may not have the luxury of retiring on their own terms. He emphasized that financial pressures often force fighters to continue competing, even when injured, which can lead to dire consequences later in life.

He also highlighted the case of Dustin Poirier, a former interim lightweight champion, who has struggled with life after retirement. Garbrandt expressed empathy for Poirier, noting that public scrutiny can be harsh, especially after a single mistake. He underscored the importance of recognizing the contributions fighters make both in and out of the octagon.
