Japan Dominates 2026 Canada Open, Secures All Five Badminton Titles

Japan showcased its badminton prowess at the 2026 Canada Open held in Markham, Canada, by winning all five titles available: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. This remarkable achievement underscores the depth of talent within Japanese badminton.

The men’s singles final featured a showdown between Yudai Okimoto and Riki Takei, both from Japan. Okimoto, the third seed, emerged victorious with a commanding score of 21-13, 21-3, demonstrating his dominance throughout the match. Earlier, Okimoto had staged a comeback in the semifinals against Canada’s top seed Victor Lai, overcoming a first-game loss to secure his place in the final.

In women’s singles, Riko Gunji, also a third seed, triumphed over Denmark’s second seed Line Christophersen in a closely contested three-game match, winning 21-15, 15-21, 21-6. Gunji’s semifinal victory over Canada’s Michelle Li further solidified her strong performance throughout the tournament.

The men’s doubles title went to Hiroki Okamura and Kyohei Yamashita, who rallied from a game down to defeat Denmark’s Christian Faust Kjaer and Rasmus Kjaer, finishing with scores of 13-21, 21-10, 21-17. In women’s doubles, Hinata Suzuki and Nao Yamakita secured the title by defeating fellow Japanese pair Kaho Osawa and Mai Tanabe 21-15, 21-16, ensuring Japan would take home the championship in this category as well.

The mixed doubles title was clinched by Akira Koga and Natsu Saito, who edged past Chinese Taipei’s Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui in a thrilling three-game match, winning 21-17, 17-21, 21-17. This final victory capped off a historic tournament for Japan, marking a significant moment in badminton history as they swept all events at the Canada Open.
