Aaron Ramsdale increasingly likely to return to Southampton

Aaron Ramsdale is likely to part ways with Newcastle United and return to his parent club, Southampton, ahead of next season.

While Aaron Ramsdale has managed to force his way into Newcastle United’s starting XI over the last month, his future still remains up in the air. According to a report from Football Insider, the Magpies are looking to sign a new goalkeeper ahead of next season, which could result in the English international’s return to Southampton.

Ramsdale made a name for himself at Sheffield United, and on the back of it, he secured a move to Arsenal. While the Englishman did a great job at the North London club under Mikel Arteta, the manager brought in David Raya as he was keen on having someone who was more comfortable on the ball.

The 27-year-old was not willing to accept a secondary role, resulting in a move to Southampton in the summer of 2024. With the Saints getting relegated to the EFL Championship, Ramsdale joined Newcastle United on loan last summer.

Eddie Howe was keen on having his services to ensure they had enough depth in goal. While he has not had a prominent role for most of the season, the former Arsenal shot-stopper has finally managed to force his way into the starting XI.

Newcastle United to sign a new goalkeeper

Aaron Ramsdale has started in each of their last six games in all competitions. He has certainly impressed everyone, but Eddie Howe is still not certain about him being an ideal choice to be their number one going forward. With Nick Pope on the decline, the Tyneside club are ready to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

While speaking about Newcastle’s goalkeeping situation, Pete O’Rourke said, “It does look like Newcastle will be prioritising a new goalkeeper, with Nick Pope losing his number one spot to Aaron Ramsdale recently. Ramsdale is only on loan from Southampton, and we’re not sure if that deal will be made permanent.”

Eddie Howe is uncertain about making Ramsdale’s move permanent. While Newcastle United will certainly go after a new goalkeeper this summer, it is not clear who, among Pope and the 27-year-old, will continue at Newcastle United.

It looks increasingly likely that Ramsdale will return to Southampton, as he might not accept a backup role going forward. If the Saints secure a return to the Premier League, they certainly would want him to return to take charge in goal. With Southampton sixth in the EFL Championship standings, they will hope to end the season strongly to get back to the top flight.
