‘Liverpool can’t play on April 15, we had to respect their history’ – Luis Campos justifies PSG’s request to postpone their Ligue 1 game to Lens

PSG Sporting Director Luis Campos has explained to RMC why Les Parisiens have requested their Saturday April 11 Ligue 1 away game against Lens to be postponed. The Artois side has officially announced they were opposed to postponing this home game. Although they will host Les Parisiens, they are powerless. Indeed, the decision to postpone Lens – PSG lies with the LFP board, who will convene on Thursday to rule on the matter.

Campos says that PSG hold no grudges at all against RC Lens, but he believes that postponing Ligue 1’s potential title-decider to help PSG’s Champions League preparations will benefit French football as a whole. “It’s about being in the best possible conditions to represent France well in Europe, which is necessary.” The Portuguese also adds that France’s fifth spot in the UEFA index is also under threat, which would warrant extra days of rest for Luis Enrique’s European champions.

Campos implies that PSG would not have requested to postpone this potential Ligue 1 title-decider had UEFA chosen different dates for the Champions League quarter-finals ties against Liverpool FC. “At first, we would have liked to play the UCL on Tuesday (April 7), then on Wednesday (April 15). But Liverpool can’t play on April 15 (which is the date of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster), we had to respect their history, because it’s a tragic date for the club.”
